Home And Away: The Final Game of the Season

Hello, and welcome to ‘Home and Away,’ a series of features where I present to you a new experience of football. I am Ryan a student at Carre’s Grammar School in Sleaford – as well as a life-long Lincoln City fan.

The past few weeks I have had my End of Year exams and I have not had time to write any articles as I have been revising. However, I am back for good now and today is the last game of the season where Lincoln City host Shrewsbury Town.

For most of the season Shrewsbury have been the overachievers of the league and at one point they were challenging for a playoff spot. Both teams want a win to secure a spot in the top half of the table at the end of the season and as some momentum to carry into next season.

At the start of the game there was a rendition of the national anthem for the Coronation of King Charles III and a silence to remember the Bradford City Stadium Fire where 56 supporters including two Lincoln City fans tragically lost their lives. Throughout this, the Shrewsbury Town fans were very respectful, and their players turned to the Stacey West Stand which was named in honour of Bill Stacey and Jim West, the two Lincoln City supporters who lost their lives in the fire.

The game was a bit mundane throughout the whole first half where nothing notable really happened. The second half had a different feel though, the imps were a lot more lively and this showed when Matty Virtue was able to slot Sean Roughan’s long throw into the bottom corner. The imps had a chance to double the lead via a late penalty however Shrewsbury shot stopper Marosi was equal to Max Sanders’ low shot and was able to parry it wide. All in all, it was a good result for the imps and a good way to end a positive season.

In other news, Adam Jackson (a regular name in the team sheet) has just signed a new contract until the end of the 24/25 season which really does put some strength into our back five for the next two seasons and some confidence in my mind that Lincoln’s squad will be just as strong next season as it is this season.

Because it is the end of the season, there will be no more match reports until the new season starts, however in the coming weeks I will write an article about the end of season awards and a bit further down the line I may write some articles reflecting this season and my whole time supporting Lincoln City, containing my favourite away days, games and goals. I am sure I will be able to clarify this as soon as I can.
